Just toward the ocean, and south of Portland, <a href="http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/TSF/nehalem.shtml">Nehalem Falls campground</a> was one of the better sites I&#8217;ve been to in Oregon; almost all these car camps have great facilities (vault toilets, water pumps, etc.). Luxurious, but not European deluxe. There were some teenagers that camped nearby that were a little loud at night, but not terribly obnoxious. They slept in their cars <img src='http://footnoteblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif' alt=':(' class='wp-smiley' /> . A fabulous drive through is included in the package, but don&#8217;t miss the campground down the gravel road like I did. <img src='http://footnoteblog.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-2-1.jpg" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-2-1.jpg','popup','width=640,height=425,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-2-1-tm.jpg" height="265" width="400" border="1" align="bottom" hspace="4" vspace="4" alt="Picture-2-1" /></a><br />
In the late afternoon light, kids frolicked and toasted toes and marshmallows. But, what fabulous light you say?</p>
<p><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-4-1.jpg" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-4-1.jpg','popup','width=640,height=425,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-4-1-tm.jpg" height="265" width="400" border="1" align="bottom" hspace="4" vspace="4" alt="Picture-4-1" /></a><br />
Just how much mastery of the sun can one have? How can the light balance so perfectly and light subjects so well in the middle of a forest?</p>
<p><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-6-1.jpg" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-6-1.jpg','popup','width=640,height=425,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-6-1-tm.jpg" height="265" width="400" border="1" align="bottom" hspace="4" vspace="4" alt="Picture-6-1" /></a><br />
Quite easily, actually…</p>
<p>If you brought your light with you!</p>
<p><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-3-1.jpg" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-3-1.jpg','popup','width=640,height=425,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-3-1-tm.jpg" height="265" width="400" border="1" align="bottom" hspace="4" vspace="4" alt="Picture-3-1" /></a><br />
Oh, my; the secret is revealed!<br />
<a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-5.jpg" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/picture-5.jpg','popup','width=640,height=425,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><br />

I kept telling <a href="http://www.masaladose.com/">Jonathan</a> that it&#8217;s not waterproof.</p>
<p>Additionally, <a href="http://client.sattadesign.com/nehalem/">there are more photos in the gallery</a> for your perusal, including a well-if-that-thirty-something-dad-is-going-to-then-I-will sequence of Kale launching off a 15ft. drop. <strong><a href="http://client.sattadesign.com/nehalem/">more»</a></strong></p>

Doe Stump, Hadley Hutton, wax and glicée, 2005.</div>
<p>Well, it was a wondrous adventure, full of surprises, partying, and general fun. We stayed at the very deluxe <a href="http://www.pueblobonitosunsetbeach.com/">Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach</a> resort in Cabo San Lucas. It&#8217;s very well done, but after a few days, the whole experience started to feel a little <a href="http://imdb.com/title/tt0061287/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnx0dD0xfGZiPXV8cG49MHxrdz0xfHE9dGhlIHByaXNvbmVyfGZ0PTF8bXg9MjB8bG09NTAwfGNvPTF8aHRtbD0xfG5tPTE_;fc=4;ft=63;fm=1">stale and repetitive</a>. Whatever. Fun was had by all. <a href="http://footnoteblog.com/photos/album/cabo/">More photos</a> can be found on <span style="color:#164ad3;"><strong>flick</strong></span><span style="color:#dd2270;"><strong>r</strong></span>. While leaving port for a fishing trip, we were dismayed to find that Damien had missed the boat. However, who do we see jumping up and down screaming at us from a nearby slip? Yup, Damien had located us!<br />
<a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00048.JPG" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00048.JPG','popup','width=2016,height=1134,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00048-tm.jpg" height="268" width="478" border="0" align="bottom" hspace="0" vspace="4" alt="damien" title="damien" longdesc="damien catches us just as we leave." class="topimage" /></a><br />
Well, wonder of wonders, the good captain backed up the boat and let our new passenger aboard. After some time in the rapidly-decreasing fog, we later caught three striped Marlin, and let them back into the water, albeit with new piercings.</p>
<p><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00063.JPG" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00063.JPG','popup','width=2016,height=1134,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC00063-tm.jpg" height="268" width="478" border="0" align="bottom" hspace="0" vspace="4" alt="york and catch" title="york and catch" longdesc="york catches a 500lb. marlin. kidding. 140lbs. sucker was big!" class="topimage" /></a><br />
The local color was really the best, in my opinion. Compare this shop photo and the resort:<br />
<a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04013.JPG" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04013.JPG','popup','width=3025,height=2241,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04013-tm.jpg" height="354" width="478" border="0" align="bottom" hspace="0" vspace="0" alt="girl in shop" title="girl in shop" longdesc="a local shop." class="topimage" /></a><br />
<a href="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04031.JPG" onclick="window.open('http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04031.JPG','popup','width=3072,height=2304,scrollbars=no,resizable=yes,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=yes,left=0,top=0');return false"><img src="http://footnoteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/03/DSC04031-tm.jpg" height="358" width="478" border="0" align="bottom" hspace="0" vspace="0" alt="the resort" title="the resort" longdesc="the &quot;zen&quot; resort at pueblo bonito pacifica. child-free. except for ours. ;)" class="topimage" /></a><br />
As I said, I think the resorts are nice, but a little to similar for me. Kale remarked that the workers and the drivers of the golf carts—yes, there is a transportation system to get you from your antiseptic room to the stale hotel food—only made $5 a day. Next socialist president, coming right up.</p>
<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s an interesting place, to say the least, and we left as the first of the wet T-shirt contests were beginning. Alas.</p>

We&#8217;re heading down to <a href="http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=cabo+san+lucas&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8">Cabo</a>. (Check out <a href="http://earth.google.com/">Google Earth</a> and search for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico). Packing, cleaning and general mayhem ensue when it comes down to the last day before a trip, especially with cranky kids. However, I&#8217;m happy to report that we are well on our way.</p>
<p>If we can, I&#8217;ll attempt to grab some shots of the various whales migrating south (as we are) for warmer waters. I also picked up a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/B0007OWWQO&#038;tag=sattadesign-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325">Sony SPK-HCA</a> underwater enclosure for filming DV video footage under water. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/B0007OWWQO&#038;tag=sattadesign-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325"><img border="0" src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0007OWWQO.01._AA_SCTZZZZZZZ_.jpg" class="alignleft"></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=sattadesign-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B0007OWWQO" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll be going deeper than a few feet (as the poor thing is only rated for 16 feet or so (!)); I also forgot to grab an underwater filter to warm the color temperature a bit during filming. I hope that the built-in color correction will help out with that issue.<br />
Keep an eye out on the <span class="flickrflick"><strong>flick</strong></span><span class="flickrr"><strong>r</strong></span><strong> </strong>site or photo pages here on the blog (<strong><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/footnoteblog/">»1</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://footnoteblog.com/photos/">»2</a></strong>) for updates; I&#8217;ll make some attempts to upload imagery, if possible.</p>

I may even do a double-backup with the horrendously slow and battery-draining <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/B00083PGFS&#038;tag=sattadesign-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325">Apple iPod Camera Connector</a>. <p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&#038;path=ASIN/B0002X1KGS&#038;tag=sattadesign-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325"><img border="0" src="http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002X1KGS.01._AA_SCTZZZZZZZ_.jpg" class="alignleft"></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=sattadesign-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=B0002X1KGS" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />I&#8217;m also bringing an iGo charger; this device charges two peripherals or accessories at a time. In this day and age, it seems like power requirements are things to add to an itinerary. I&#8217;ll attempt to detail needs/other processes and methodologies when I get back.</p>
